Every powderless DTF system shipping today trades wash durability for hand-feel and air quality. That trade is real, it is measurable, and no supplier has published a third-party test to size it. Two competitors — DCC and Matsui — have separately put their own powderless wash numbers at roughly half of powdered DTF. When two rivals independently land on the same unflattering figure about their own products, that number is worth believing.
The powder step is not the reason your shop is slow. It is the reason your shop is dusty. Those are different problems, and only one of them justifies replacing a working line.
Direct Answer: Powderless DTF removes the separate adhesive powder step, running print, dry, press instead of print, powder, cure, press. Adhesion is handled three different ways — built into the ink, jetted as a liquid adhesive through a dedicated printhead, or pre-coated into the film. Supplier demonstration data puts wash durability at roughly 15–25 washes against 40–50 for powdered DTF, and no independent comparative test has been published. Only the jetted-adhesive route changes preflight, because adhesive coverage becomes a RIP channel driven by your artwork rather than a mechanical step after it.
Powderless DTF, UV-reactive and neon inks, and certified eco formulations dominated the 2026 trade show circuit from Impressions Expo Long Beach in January through FESPA Barcelona in May. With PRINTING United opening in Las Vegas on 23 September, here is where the technology actually stands, who is shipping versus announcing, and what changes in your preflight and RIP setup if you make the jump.
What does powderless DTF actually change?
Powderless DTF removes the separate adhesive powder step, collapsing the workflow from four stages to three: print, dry, press. Adhesion is handled either inside the ink itself or by a liquid adhesive jetted through a dedicated printhead channel, so there is no shaker unit and no tunnel dryer melting solid granules.
Curing moves from a full-size tunnel to a smaller, lower-temperature panel. You lose the shaker, the dust, and a real chunk of floor space. You gain a consumable that costs more and a climate sensitivity you did not have before — liquid adhesive thickens in cold, dry rooms and can clog heads. If your production space runs unheated in a Scandinavian winter, sort that out before anything else.

Three different chemistries, one marketing label
“Powderless” covers at least three approaches with different failure modes, and treating them as interchangeable is how shops buy the wrong machine.
The first builds adhesion into the ink, so nothing extra gets jetted. DCC markets this as powder-free and glue-free, using an ink platform developed with Nur Ink Innovations. Cleanest architecture on paper, but you are locked to one supplier’s ink for the life of the machine.
The second jets liquid adhesive through a dedicated head. DuPont’s Artistri JA1100 Jettable Adhesive, integrated by Polyprint, works this way, as does Matsui’s system and the Chinese glue-channel machines. This is the route that matters most for prepress, because adhesive placement becomes a file-driven variable.
The third puts adhesive in a pre-coated film that bonds chemically with wet ink. Simplest hardware, highest consumable cost, least common commercially.
One detail buyers keep missing: Matsui has stated its powderless ink works with existing DTF printers but needs at least three separate printheads — not three channels on one head. That is a hardware change, not an ink swap. Ask any supplier pitching a retrofit which of the two they mean.
Which manufacturers are actually shipping powderless DTF?
As of September 2026, the two largest incumbents in garment decoration hardware have no powderless product at all. Epson said so on the record in February, and Roland DG has announced nothing. The category is being led by a mid-size Indian manufacturer, a Greek manufacturer partnered with an American chemical company, a Japanese ink house that admits it is not finished, and a cluster of Chinese OEMs already taking orders.

Resolute shipped a hybrid in 2022. MTEX NS showed a powderless machine at PRINTING United in 2024. What happened in 2026 was not the invention of powderless DTF — it was the moment enough suppliers arrived at once for the trade press to call it a category.
Keep that in mind when a salesperson tells you the technology is brand new and you need to move now. It is four years old and still not settled.
How durable are powderless DTF transfers?
Current supplier demonstration data puts powderless transfers at roughly 15–25 washes against 40–50 for traditional powdered DTF. No independent, standardised comparative testing across manufacturers exists as of September 2026.
The full evidence base is short enough to state completely:
- DCC, during its own product demonstration, reported more than 20 washes for powderless against roughly 40–50 for the powdered version at the same testing stage.
- Matsui, describing its own system in January 2026, put wash fastness at around 15–20 washes and said plainly it is still less than powder.
- Polyprint and DuPont claim consistent wash performance. No figure has been published.
- Independent comparative testing: none found.
Two competing suppliers independently landing near half the wash life of powdered DTF is the strongest signal available, and both were describing their own products. Nobody understates their own numbers for fun. Treat 15–25 washes as your planning assumption until someone publishes an ISO 105-C06 or AATCC 61 comparison.
Wash performance also shifts with the garment, ink, film, cure temperature, press settings, detergent and care label. A booth demo number tells you almost nothing about your blanks. Test on the exact garment you sell most of, and run it to failure rather than stopping at 20.
At 20 washes, a customer wearing a shirt weekly sees degradation inside five months. For a concert tee, a corporate event run or a seasonal streetwear drop, nobody will ever notice. For workwear, uniforms, kids’ clothing or anything sold with a durability promise, it is a warranty claim waiting to happen.

What is the difference between UV DTF, neon DTF and glow-in-the-dark?
UV DTF is a separate process that prints UV-curable ink onto two-part AB film for hard surfaces. Fluorescent or neon DTF is textile ink that absorbs ultraviolet light and re-emits it as visible light. Glow-in-the-dark is phosphorescent ink that stores light energy and releases it slowly. Three unrelated things, sold under names that overlap badly.

A customer who orders glow-in-the-dark and receives fluorescent will reject the job, and they will be right to. Put the distinction in your product copy, your quote template and your artwork approval, not just in your own head. If you run a web-to-print front end, this is a two-line fix that pays for itself the first time it stops a reprint.
Are water-based DTF inks actually more eco-friendly?
Nearly all DTF ink is already water-based pigment chemistry rather than solvent or plastisol. A supplier telling you their ink is water-based has told you nothing that distinguishes it from the ink you already buy. The claim is table stakes dressed up as a feature.
What does distinguish suppliers is documented compliance. OEKO-TEX ECO PASSPORT is the meaningful third-party benchmark, because it independently tests for restricted substances rather than accepting a self-declaration. It is increasingly a hard requirement for anyone selling into baby-brand or big-box retail channels, which makes it a commercial gate rather than a values choice.
Certification is also not the same as harmlessness. Pigments remain industrial chemicals whatever the label says. Ask for the current Safety Data Sheet, confirm APEO-free and formaldehyde-free status in writing, and check the certificate number against the issuing body rather than trusting a logo on a supplier PDF.
If air quality is what is pushing you toward powderless, price a proper extraction and filtration setup on your existing line first. It costs a fraction of a new printer and it does not cost you 25 washes.
Powderless is worth buying for hand-feel and floor space. Buying it purely to solve dust is an expensive way to fix a ventilation problem.
Does powderless DTF change your preflight and RIP workflow?
Powderless does not change white underbase generation, choke or knockout logic. What it changes is that adhesive stops being a mechanical step downstream of your file and becomes a variable your file controls.
What stays the same
The documented baseline across PrintFactory, Maintop and PrintEXP is unchanged. Generate a white underbase beneath the colour layers. Apply a choke of roughly 1–5 pixels, or 0.2–0.5 mm, so white never peeks past colour edges. Knock out white under pure-white and transparent areas. Run 80–120% white density, print white before CMYK. Knockout alone still cuts white ink usage by 25–40% on designs with large solid areas.
What changes
On an adhesive-jetting system the RIP drives a physical glue channel, so your preflight now owns adhesive coverage. A file that was merely inefficient before can now be defective.
Specialty inks need explicit spot channel mapping. Map a named spot — “Neon Yellow” to the physical fluorescent channel — or the RIP will simulate the effect in CMYK and produce a dull, non-reactive print that looks fine on screen and fails under blacklight.
And you need two RIP presets, permanently. On hybrid machines the powdered and powderless queues respond differently to ink density and coverage. Test fine lines, gradients and solid fills through both before committing production, and never assume a validated powdered preset carries across.
Knockout now has a second-order effect. If adhesive coverage follows ink coverage, knocking out white also removes adhesive in that region. On a powdered line, aggressive knockout only saved you white ink. On a jetted-adhesive line it can under-glue large knocked-out areas. Print a test file with heavy knockout and wash it before you trust your existing preset.
Choke may need re-tuning per queue. On powdered DTF, a white layer that overshoots slightly still gets powdered and still bonds. On jetted adhesive, if the adhesive layer does not extend at least to the ink edge you get unglued edges and lift after a few washes. Your 0.3 mm choke was tuned for a forgiving process.
Neither of these is published test data. Both follow directly from how the systems work, and neither costs more than an afternoon to check.
Should your shop switch to powderless DTF?
Sort by what you sell, not by what impressed you at a show.

Powderless DTF is real, it is shipping, and it solves problems that are genuinely annoying: dust, floor space, stiff hand-feel, a shaker that needs cleaning. It also costs you roughly half your wash life on current evidence, locks you into one supplier’s consumables, and adds a climate dependency to a process that did not have one.
The shops that come out ahead over the next 18 months will be the ones that bought hybrid hardware, kept both queues validated, and matched the process to the job rather than converting the line. That is not a hedge. It is the only position that survives whichever way the durability data lands.
