The information gap that costs DTF operators thousands

Every DTF printing guide online is written by someone selling you equipment. The cost estimates are optimistic. The profit claims assume perfect conditions. And the pricing advice — if it exists at all — is based on numbers that don't include the costs vendors conveniently omit.

The result: operators who are busy but not profitable. They won orders, they run the printer, they press garments, they pay for ink and film and powder — and at the end of the month, the margins are thinner than they expected. Some don't even know their margins. They're guessing.

White ink alone accounts for 59% of a typical dark-garment transfer cost. Most operators don't know this number — and most vendor cost estimates don't include maintenance ink, waste, or equipment depreciation. This book includes all of it.

This book exists because that information gap shouldn't cost you money. It gives you the real numbers, the frameworks that protect your margins, and the operational discipline that turns a DTF printer into a business — not an expensive hobby.

10 chapters. Zero fluff.

Every chapter delivers a specific, actionable outcome. Beginners start at Chapter 1. Experienced operators skip to Chapter 3.

Kjell Karlsson - author

About the author

Kjell Karlsson has worked in the printing industry for over 30 years. In 2012, while working at Marabu — one of the world's leading ink manufacturers — he and colleague Vegard Flatjord began experimenting with early DTF techniques, combining inkjet CMYK with screen-printed white bases using Marabu's Maquajet DA-E ink on modified Epson printers. That was five to seven years before the first commercial DTF printers reached the market.

He is the founder of Printing TLDR, a vendor-neutral media and tools platform for print professionals. His weekly newsletter, the Wide Format Brief, delivers curated industry intelligence to print shop owners worldwide.

Common questions

Does this book recommend specific printers or brands?

No. Models change every year. Instead, it gives you evaluation criteria that work for any printer on the market — now and in the future. You'll learn what to look for, what to ignore, and what questions to ask before you buy.

I'm a complete beginner. Is this too advanced?

The book is structured so beginners start at Chapter 1 and work through sequentially. Chapters 1–5 cover everything from market assessment through your first profitable order. The templates include a 90-day launch checklist with 42 specific tasks.

I already run a DTF operation. Will I learn anything new?

If you know your exact cost per transfer at three different design sizes, your film utilization rate, and your maintenance ink cost per day — you may not. If any of those numbers are a guess, Chapters 3–4 alone will change how you price your work. The cost-per-print calculator template pays for the book on the first order you reprice.

What format is the ebook?

PDF ebook (readable on any device) plus 8 Excel spreadsheet templates. Instant download after purchase. Approximately 30,000 words across 120+ pages.

Is this book affiliated with any printer manufacturer?

No. The author has no vendor affiliations, sponsorships, or equipment partnerships. The book is entirely self-published through Printing TLDR. Every recommendation is based on production-floor outcomes, not manufacturer relationships.
